In 1994 Hazel became the UK's first Alternative Health Agony Aunt, with her column What's The Alternative in the Daily Mail. In 1997 she moved to the Style Section of the Sunday Times and was voted Health Journalist of the Year 1997. In 1998 Hazel left the Sunday Times to concentrate on writing books.
“After a lifetime of illness - during my thirties I decided that if I was ever going to become and stay well, I needed to take charge of my health. And today I know that 85% of chronic degenerative diseases and a host of common medical conditions could be avoided or cured if we could be more willing to make a few changes to our diet and lifestyle.” |

Hazel’s journey to a healthier lifestyle:
My name is Hazel Courteney and for the past 15 years I have been an alternative health writer and broadcaster. I turned to diet and lifestyle changes after 30 years of chronic illness which left me with conditions ranging from acne and thrush, to chronic fatigue and colitis. I collected illnesses the way most people collect souvenirs on their holidays!
Orthodox medicine and surgery had on several occasions saved my life, but the drugs I was given often caused negative side effects.
For instance by the age of 17 I had been taking antibiotics almost constantly since the age of 6, little did I know then that the drugs were the trigger for most of my health problems including chronic fatigue, tonsillitis, thrush, and candida - a yeast fungal overgrowth - which practically ruined my digestive tract. When I was about 30 my husband asked casually ‘What is your disease of the day? ‘ He meant it as a joke, but his statement was to change the course of my life.
It made me face the fact that to have a “well day” was a rare gift and that the majority of my life to that moment I had either been taking numerous prescription drugs, confined to bed or on an operating table. It finally dawned on me that I had handed almost total responsibility for my health to my doctor – it was time for me to learn about my own body and take control.
Overnight I began researching all aspects of alternative ways to become and stay healthier. Eventually I realised that our bodies are basically made of what we eat, particularly the various vitamins, minerals and essential fats that we absorb from our diet. This seemingly self-evident fact was a revelation to me! Until that moment it had never occurred to me that what I was putting in my mouth was triggering 85% of my health problems!
Many health courses followed and after several years friends starting asking for my advice. This lead in turn to my own health column and in1993 I became the first “Alternative Health” columnist in the Daily Mail. Later I moved to The Sunday Times. I was very proud to be voted Health Journalist of the Year in 1997.
As a result of writing weekly columns and answering more than 30,000 readers’ letters over a period of 5 years, I learned a lot. I was also privileged to correspond and meet with hundreds of highly qualified nutritionists, naturopaths, doctors and scientists all of whom contributed to my growing interest and knowledge of health issues. That was 14 years ago, and since then I have written several best selling books on health related issues.
This personal journey has provided me with a wealth of information on what is new and exciting in the health care industry. What I am offering you today is an opportunity to share in the benefits of this accumulated knowledge.
I will be presenting you with a summary of the knowledge I have accumulated in the last 14 years - my intention is to explain health issues in a way that makes the whole subject more accessible.
To be informed on any topic is to gain power. With regard to your health a little knowledge may indeed be a dangerous thing!
Every human being is unique and what may be an appropriate course of action for one person may be a disaster for another. So again, if you discover ideas by reading or listening to my published material, share the ideas with your GP or other health advisor and work out an agreed action plan together.
What I can offer is a fresh perspective on your health – insights into positive lifestyle habits we can consciously develop, and perhaps more importantly, insights into the bad lifestyle habits that we have unconsciously adopted and maybe need to change.
Hazel’s Health Plan – a 3 step approach to achieve a healthier lifestyle:
During my own researches into alternative health solutions it quickly became evident that there is rarely a “quick fix” to our health challenges. The knowledge that needs to be absorbed in order to arrive at an intelligent conclusion is vast.
What I have on offer today is the culmination of 14 years of personal study on my part. My intention is to deliver this information in a simple 3 step formula that will hopefully allow you to reap the benefits of what I have learned, and apply it to your own lives.
My personal commitment is that this 3 Step Approach will deliver 14 years of value – and without the need for you to commit to 14 years of study!
During my time as a journalist I corresponded with thousands of readers suffering from a multitude of different aches and pains. What became clear really quickly was the frustration experienced by men and women who desperately wanted to regain some control over their health, and the drugs they were taking were just not hitting the spot!
When I bought my first car the garage forgot to advise me how and when to check the oil and water – guess what happened. Driving down the motorway I became aware of steam rising from the bonnet. A passing motorist gave me the advice I badly needed and showed me how to top up the radiator!
Our bodies are a biological masterpiece. A hugely complex, interconnecting bio-machine, that responds to a regular top up of the compounds that help to keep it running in top form. We are like my car, we will function properly if the “oil and water” are checked from time to time and more oil and water added as necessary.
If you would like to hear about a different way to manage your health issues, one that does not necessarily involve the consumption of prescription drugs I suspect that what I have to say may be of interest to you.
Sometimes what holds us back is not what we know, that we don’t know – it’s what we don’t know, that we don’t know?
In other words what may be keeping you from improving your health is NEW information – information about the way your body works, the food and nutrients it needs to function properly, and the lifestyle choices that make the process of healthy living more accessible.
Now there will be a number of readers thinking “here we go again, no more cream cakes, and someone else offering up sixty ways and reasons for eating brown rice and pulses!” Far from it! I still have a love of carrot cake, although I may eat less than I used to.
What is required at this point is that you desire an improvement in your health – and are willing to undertake a review of your lifestyle in order to achieve this?
I continue to strive and improve my own health. I am not about to suggest that you make changes to your lifestyle, that I have not included in my own. I still have health challenges. What I can say is the way in which I deal with those challenges has become more effective as my learning has progressed. I may still fall victim to infection and injury but the way I treat the “maladies” and the speed with which I recover is much improved.
The good times feel REALLY good – the bad times not so bad!
So how can I communicate what I know and not turn the whole process into a real chore – and one that you are unlikely to complete?
Looking back on my own experiences of exploring health issues I can see that I have been involved in a three stage process. It is this process that I would like to offer to you today.
In a nutshell the three stages are:
- Information gathering.
- Planning lifestyle changes.
- Sourcing backup – where do I go, what do I do when new challenges arise!
Let’s take a look at these stages in more detail.
Step 1 – Information gathering.
As I have mentioned previously it has taken me 14 years of research to gather the information that I can give you access to today. 14 years of conversations with some of the more enlightened speakers and health practitioners whose opinions I have come to respect.
I wrote more than 30,000 letters as an “Agony Aunt” columnist with the Daily Mail and the Sunday Times to readers with health issues. Each reply was carefully researched.
I have written three books on alternative health – each book required more than a year of painstaking study to ensure that the issues discussed, and more importantly the remedies offered, were appropriate and proven to help.
The point I am trying to make is that to stand in my place, with the accumulated knowledge that I have, would take you some time to recreate – from a standing start!
We want it all – and we want it NOW!
Patience has never been my strongest suit. I’m not sure that I would want to commit to some protracted home study process to pick up the knowledge that I now possess.
As a consequence I have given some thought as to the best way to share the knowledge I have.
Certainly you could read the books that I have written. The last published runs to some 360 pages and offers advice on more than 250 specific health conditions. Whilst the text is comprehensive, and very useful as a “dip in and out” reference work, the underlying principals that determine how healthy we feel, have to be inferred from the specific problems dealt with in the book.
So I have prepared something quite new for you to consider today.
I have recorded an audio CD in which I describe the 20 lifestyle issues that I believe will have the greatest impact on your health. The CD is only available from this web site and was recorded here in the UK early April 2007.
 |
If you are prepared to invest just over 1 hour of your time and listen to this CD you will have the benefit of research and learning which has taken me over 14 years to accumulate.
After just one hour you will probably have a better understanding of the underlying causes of the most common ailments that afflict us today. In particular:
|
- You will truly begin to understand that what we eat and drink makes us what we are.
- More importantly you will see what may be missing from your diet, and
- What can be reduced or eliminated from your diet.
I will discuss ways that you can:
- LIMIT damage to your cells by increasing your intake of anti-oxidants.
- How to protect your heart.
- Deal with inflammation and degeneration.
- Deal with toxicity.
- Eat the “right” fats and eliminate the “wrong” fats.
And much, much more.
I cover 20 topics in total. All with suggestions for positive changes to your lifestyle that will have a correspondingly positive impact on your health.
Step 2 – Planning your lifestyle changes.
None of us, or very few of us, like change.
The status quo is compelling – never more so than when considering what we eat and drink. We like our treats! We are pleasure seekers, and are reluctant to see beyond the next “sweet” activity. Whether it’s what you eat, drink or smoke, the experience needs to leave you with a smile on your face.
My own father made a decision at age 49 to resume smoking, and this after his first heart attack. I believe he knew that the habit was killing him, but the short term pleasure was just too seductive. Six months later he was dead. I like to think that if I had known at 17 what I know now, I could have provided my Dad with information that would have offered him a different perspective.
Caffeine in tea, coffee, chocolate and many soft drinks often keeps us going in this busy world we live in, but can play havoc with our natural bio-rhythms, and can have many unfortunate side effects.
Nicotine and other by-products sucked into our lungs, directly or indirectly, similarly stimulate and relax us at the same time.
And as for alcohol!
Unfortunately the pleasure provided by these substances is for most people, addictive. We just have to have more. Eventually a repeat “fix” becomes “more of the same” as our bodies struggle to regain some sort of balance. The ingested chemicals lose their potency, and then we really do need more!
To break into this “destructive” cycle requires a combination of willpower and commitment.
I would suggest that you create goals for yourself that are realistic – we are all different and for some people breaking bad habits can create as much stress (and therefore potential damage to your body) as leaving things as they are.
Often we need to take small steps until we have the confidence, and courage, to make larger steps.
So if we really do want to follow through and address changes to our lifestyles – we NEED A PLAN.
As we are all different we each need our own plan – one that works for us.
I will be offering you a useful tool to help your planning process at the end of this report.
For now lets move on to the final step.
Step 3 – Sourcing backup.
There is no point in setting off to reach the top of a mountain if you fail to establish your base camp. The place you will return when the high points have been reached and you need to regroup and recharge your batteries.
My CD will provide the goals, those lifestyle changes that you are willing to take on. You will have your plan; all you need now is backup!
You can of course re-run the CD, or read the transcript that we will provide to achieve clarity regarding the 20 strategies provided. The notes will also contain additional information about organisations and individuals that you can approach for expert advice and support. I have personally been in touch with all of them for my own benefit or to assist with my research.

A Closing message from Hazel:
No-one is going to time your progress, or insist that you make specific changes to your lifestyle.
YOU CAN MOVE AT YOUR OWN PACE.
And don’t forget that if you can see no way to apply my suggestions you have a 100% 30 day money back guarantee.
What I am endorsing is that you take a look at your lifestyle. There is no point consuming food supplements, eating organic food IF YOU SMOKE AND TAKE NO EXERCISE.
What is needed, in my opinion, is a change in the way we organise our hectic lives so that we include those essential lifestyle “habits” that will support a healthier experience of living – “live longer and prosper!”
The Cambridge Dictionary defines the word “lifestyle” as:
noun [C]: someone's way of living; the things that a person or particular group of people usually do.
The definition holds the key to my message today. We need to examine the things we do, the habits we have developed, that get in the way of a healthy lifestyle. We need to take on positive changes so that they become the things we “usually do”, instead of the things that we “rarely do”.
I do not profess to know it all, but what I do know is set out in this offer today. If you purchase the audio CD, the notes, lifestyle planner and my book you will have a unique resource that will enable you to undertake your own Lifestyle Audit.
Take a look, listen to the CD. I recommend that you give yourself an hour off from your daily chores and listen to the CD from beginning to end. I hardly draw breath during the recording, there is so much that I have to say – so do not be phased by the amount of detail.
If what I have to say, or just part of what I have to say, makes sense you will have taken the first steps to a positive change in your energy levels and how well you feel.
I would guess that readers, who already have an active interest in their health, may have already integrated a number of the issues that I have included on my CD, but maybe not all?
Read the notes, contact the retailers and other practitioners that I have recommended, use the lifestyle planner. When new health challenges come along dip into my book, it is packed with relevant alternative suggestions for more than 250 health conditions.
As new facts become available I will be in touch. Nothing remains unchanging, except perhaps our commitment to making the most of the time we have left.
I sincerely hope that the ideas I have shared with you inspire you to take a look.
Yours sincerely,
Hazel Courteney
May 2007.
